Townsman: [talking about Marjorie Nugent] She'd chew your ass for a hat
Tale
In a small Texas town, a kindly undertaker strikes up a friendship with a wealthy widow, though when she starts to become controlling, he does his best to break away from her grasp. Real residents of Carthage, Texas who knew the real Bernie Tiede and Marjorie Nugent appear in the film, providing commentary on the events. Bernie committed the murder in 1996, but he answers an iPhone almost immediately after the murder.. I mean, she'd spoil a brand new three bedroom, two bath, double wide bastard for you. No problem.. Before the main credits roll, real life photos of Bernie and Marjorie together are shown, along with a short video of Bernie Teide talking to Jack Black..

Bernie (2011) Don't you hate it when you watch a funny movie and at the end you think, wow, that could have been a lot funnier? This movie is really funny, and Jack Black is kind of brilliant at being this man who has incredible generosity and a weird social skill to be everyone's favorite. And who ends up taking care of the richest woman in town, putting her name on her will and so on, as you can guess.
It fits into a pattern
types are shown and are some of the funniest moments. When these people are shown again and again, there's a welcome sense of familiarity - a refresher on things from a familiar face - but also a likeness to the film. And it's a major part of the movie, with thirty of these talking heads, so naturally the momentum of the main plot is often slowed down. As events become more extreme, the film does not. It goes hard, relying on great idiosyncratic acting and the quirky (and exaggerated?) culture of East Texas. But Black lives his character so well it's scary.
lead the day Things well done
The other big name (the biggest name) is Shirley MacLaine, who doesn't really have that much to do (she's mostly silent, just ominous or awful). And of course, she doesn't make it through the whole movie (the trailer and teaser give too much away about that aspect). The third name is Matthew McConaughey and he's predictably fun and funny, though he's mixed in with a lot of other unknown characters who are also fun and funny. So that's the script and something funny. Director and writer Richard Linklater is a curious talent, a little all over the map, but good at several things, including being new enough to seem like the indie director he once was. His pair of films "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset" become unlikely classics (I like them both a lot) and yet he's also known for lesser comedies like "Dazed and Confused"; and now this one.
A good time
Yes, watch this for a good laugh. The beginning will seem a bit like a lame "Six Feet Under"; episode, but stick with it. Black's character is utterly compelling and funny.
