It follows a singer who suddenly dies while on tour in Japan, but whose spirit lives on and embarks on a journey to find humanity in the afterlife. The Singapore premiere, which is also a Southeast Asian premiere for the film, will be held in conjunction with the 40th edition of the French film festival vOilah! and the Singapore International Film Festival. Spirit World is a multi-layered film that, at its core, is about two very human drives. Firstly, the creative instinct that drives artists and secondly, the emotional need for familial bonds. Already at the start of the film we are introduced to three characters who have lost touch with both of these defining drives. Singer-songwriter Claire (Deneuve), Yuzo (Sakai), a former composer turned piano tuner, and his estranged son Hayato (Takenouchi), an anime director whose most acclaimed work now seems to be behind him. For these three characters, decisions and actions in death and the afterlife are necessary to find a solution to life’s unresolved problems. This is, of course, a highly idealized perspective on this universal question: What happens when we die? Spirit World answers this question in a very realistic and objective way. Fear of the unknown is set aside and a decision is made to help the living – a selfless quest that, for our protagonists, leads to the fulfillment of their own humble desires. This is Spirit World’s life-affirming message – that the creative impulse can bear fruit and heal family bonds when exercised with selfless intent. From a technical perspective, Spirit World ticks all the boxes for audience engagement. The enjoyable performances draw you in, the beautiful scenery (and seascapes) of Takasaki and Chiba are a joy to behold, and homage is paid to musicians from the 60s and 70s – a golden age of creativity that may never be experienced again. A sweet and warm cinematic experience for anyone who has felt the pull of creativity and family love.
