What really makes this film stand out are the two excellent central roles by Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson. Without them, this film would be completely forgettable, especially since this film doesn't really break new ground in its genre and the plot is weak. Sophie Wilde and Antonio Banderas are also good in supporting roles. Kidman perfectly portrays a woman who wants to immerse herself in her desires, but is constantly at odds with them. The music, the soundtrack, the atmosphere, the costumes that Kidman wears, and the cinematography all really elevate this film. The film feels very cold and alienated, which is reflected in our main character. As mentioned, the biggest problem with the film is that the story is weak and basically presents nothing new. For what it is, it is surprisingly boring. It almost seemed like the film was shy and afraid to really go there and be lustful. But maybe that was intentional, reflecting the reluctance of Roma to go there alone. While there is some nudity, it is never truly sexual. Maybe that was the director's intention. While sex scenes in erotic thrillers are usually sexual, passionate, obscene, almost fantastical, the sex scenes in this film feel very organic and at times even embarrassing. There is an awkward silence between Romi and Samuel, confusion about what to do next, uncertainty about intimacy. It makes you feel like a fly on the wall. But that is both a positive and a negative for the viewer. Positive, because the film feels realistic, perhaps relatable. But a negative, because most of the film is difficult to watch. What would really elevate this film is the revelation of Romi's past and her dark desires. The one small gripe I had with the film is about Dickinson's tattoos. With all his tattoos, he seemed like a walking evil stereotype. Still, the film is worth watching, if only for the excellent performances.
